The Mornings of COMPANION officially started on Monday, March 2nd 2020. With a hope that only faith can generate, Mari Carmen began teaching us how to focus on our breathing while listening to music that allowed us to experience the tranquility and stillness that a beach offers. This gave way for us to hone in and learn to enjoy the peace that it provides. It was a success. We left refreshed and rejuvenated.

After, we had some tea and started the reading club. As this year marks the 150th Anniversary of Gabriel y Galán, we read “Mi Vaquerillo”. This beautiful poem brought back memories of a time, a field and relationships full of generosity, in the midst of the difficulties of poverty. It was enriching and thought-provoking. On Wednesday March 5, Pilar instructed us in a well-versed passive exercise class while the Concierto de Aranjuez played in the background. With the hula hoops she had bought, she managed to make us laugh and enjoy the time as a child would. From then on, we decided that her class would not only consist of passive exercises but also laughter therapy.

Following another tea break, Engracia taught us how to make a flower brooch. I never thought that my clumsy hands would be capable of creating such a beautiful thing that my husband would admired. Here you can see the photo of what can be done with modeling clay.

On Friday, Ada commenced the memory workshop. We shared precious recollections of our first days at school, of our first trip, our first Christmases etc. In doing so, we brought these memories back to the present. Back to life. Sharing our past helped us to remember, conserver, and fight against memory loss.

Thereafter, we had the first origami class with Alan. Oh, how easy it seems to make birds out of paper. But how difficult it can be when those hands do not obey as easily as before. Nevertheless, the time spent was still a success!

Subsequently, however, the coronavirus arrived and all of our activities had to come to a halt. Although it is time to wait, we have already taken the first steps towards accomplishing the mission of COMPANION, and God willing, we will start up again soon.
